How a pro League of Legends game works
League of Legends is Riot Games' five-versus-five battle arena, and the most-watched esport in the world. Each team defends a base on Summoner's Rift and wins by destroying the enemy's Nexus. Every player has a fixed position:
- Top plays a lonely lane, usually on a tank or a fighter.
- Jungle roams between lanes, sets up ganks and controls neutral objectives.
- Mid sits in the shortest lane with the most influence over both sides of the map.
- Bot (ADC) is the damage carry who scales into the late game.
- Support protects the ADC and controls vision around the map.
Pro games turn on objectives more than kills. Dragons give teams lasting bonuses, and four of them earn a powerful dragon soul. Baron Nashor's buff is usually what lets a team break into the enemy base. Watch where the five players gather before each objective spawns, and you can often see the next fight coming.
The draft
Before every game, teams take turns banning and picking champions: five bans and five picks each. A good draft can win a game before it starts, and analysts spend as much time on it as on the game itself.
Since 2025, the major leagues use Fearless Draft. Once a champion is picked in a series, neither team can pick it again in that series. So a best-of-five tests how many champions a team can actually play, and later games often bring out picks you rarely see.
How the season works
Teams compete in regional leagues: the LCK (Korea), LPL (China), LEC (Europe, Middle East and Africa), LCS (North America), CBLOL (Brazil) and LCP (Asia-Pacific). Korea and China are traditionally the strongest. The best teams from each region then meet at international events:
- First Stand, early in the year.
- The Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), in the summer.
- The World Championship (Worlds), in the autumn, the biggest event in esports by viewership. It opens with a Swiss stage and finishes with a best-of-five knockout bracket.
Patches and the meta
Riot updates League every two weeks or so. Pro play uses a specific patch for each part of the season, and small changes to champions or items can reshape what teams draft. That's why a team can dominate one split and struggle the next. When you read a preview, the patch is often the first thing worth checking.
